Irondequoit neighbors air concerns over recent strong, foulsmelling odors

IRONDEQUOIT, N.Y. (WROC) - The News 8 team received inquiries into extremely strong and pungent smells in and around the Irondequoit area, right near the edge of Rochester, by Ridge Road and Route 104.
There are standard industrial city smells like gas and production byproduct from large facilities, but then there is what was described to News 8 reporter Isabel Garcia as a truly a 'wicked' scent.
One person living near off N. Clinton Ave. and Seneca Ave., over near the Seneca Park Zoo, wrote in to News 8 saying they were concerned about the smells, noting there are sometimes unpleasant odors from wastewater treatment centers nearby, but this time it was different; much stronger. People also told us there were intense smells in and around the Walmart area over the weekend near Hudson Ave.
In the same vicinity, business owner Gregory Genrich, who runs the Irondequoit Sports Center with Genrich Athletic Group, said last week there was a local fire department response to his facility over the odors.
"It's like sticking your head in an outhouse," Gregory Genrich said Monday afternoon outside of the Sports Center.
Genrich noted he, himself, did not reach out to the fire department as he was indoors mostly where the smells were not prevalent.
There were hundreds of children and parents at the sports center last Thursday for practices and games. Suddenly, there were a handful of firefighters entering his building urgently, alerting Genrich to the outdoor issue.
"I didn't have any idea what was going on, so I walked down and I asked them and they said somebody had reported that a foul smell of either there was a gas leak or a sewer leak in my building and I'm like - there's nothing wrong inside the building," Gregory Genrich said.
"The fire department took out their sniffer and said yea no, but when we came out into the parking lot, they said it was the Eastman Kodak sewage treatment plant that had the foul smell and that the wind was blowing from west to east," he added.
Fire officials tell News 8 the source could come from an array of reasons, including changes in atmospheric pressure, which can make smells denser, more folks turning on their heaters for the winter, etc...

Monroe County officials told News 8 their offices did receive complaints from residents over the odors, prompting an investigation into county facilities, including the sewer treatment plants, where it was determined NOT to be the cause of the smells.
There were inquiries into the source coming from nearby Kodak plants, however in an email response, the company stated it "has no knowledge of any issue/incident related to this inquiry."
News 8 also reached out RG&E to inquire, as well as the State Department of Environmental Conservation. We will provide any updates as we learn more details.
