WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) - The Kansas Food Bank provides some of the food for open-door distribution. It has enough to get through this week, but it needs more to make it through the holiday season since more families are turning to food pantries for help. Each year, the Wichita facility distributes more than 15 million pounds of food to about 200 food pantries across the state. "You know we work with about 700 partners across Kansas, and so while 4,000 turkeys is incredible, we also still rely on the donations coming in to purchase additional food," said Kate Birkhofer, the marketing and communications manager for the Kansas Food Bank. Help thousands of area children through Salvation Army Angel Tree The need has increased since the COVID-19 pandemic and hasn't tapered off like they expected. "This holiday season is just a continuation of that. You know, we're seeing a lot of families that may be turning to pantries for the first time, but we're also seeing a lot of families and individuals who more consistently need assistance," said Birkhofer. Birkhofer says any type of donation, whether food or funds, helps during the holiday season.
