Colder air is moving into New Mexico Monday. Warmer weather returns Tuesday as snow and spotty showers will move into northern New Mexico and southern Colorado. A strong cold front has been moving through eastern and northern New Mexico Monday. This has kept high temperatures over 25° cooler for far eastern parts of the state compared to Saturday. Clouds have been streaming into the state with mid-level moisture ahead of a storm system. This storm will start to bring snow the the San Juan Mountains in southern Colorado and northern New Mexico tonight. Westerly winds increase across New Mexico Wednesday, bringing a warmup across the state. The strongest winds are going to be along and east of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains and east of the Sandias where wind gusts up to 65 mph will be possible Tuesday into Wednesday morning. Snow will pick up in the San Juan Mountains with spotty showers in southwest Colorado and northwest New Mexico. Wednesday afternoon will stay above average for most of New Mexico before another cold front moves in from the northeast late Wednesday afternoon and a Pacific front moves in from the west. These will increase the mountain snow and valley rain chances across northern New Mexico and southern Colorado Wednesday. Winds will also be breezy again. Rain and mountain snow continues into Thursday morning across northern New Mexico, but will be ending through the morning. No significant travel impacts are expected across New Mexico with this storm system other than some wind and heavier snowfall at high mountain passes, especially in southern Colorado. The San Juan Mountains in southwest Colorado could see anywhere from one to two feet of snow above 8,000' with up to 40" above 10,000'. In New Mexico, the San Juans could see 5" to 10". The Sangre de Cristo Mountains will also see snow with anywhere from an inch or two to a foot across mountain peaks. Temperatures will also be much colder across the state for Thanksgiving Day with the drier air that will move in by the afternoon. Quieter weather sticks around after Thanksgiving Day as temperatures begin a slow warming trend into the weekend. Winds will be breezier Saturday afternoon as well.
