University of Rhode Island Press Release
KINGSTON, R.I. – Following his dominant weekend performance, Rhode Island running back Malik Grant has been named the Co-Offensive Player of the Week by CAA Football and collected a Gold Helmet Award, presented by the Jack Grinold/Eastern Massachusetts Chapter of the National Football Foundation, from the New England Football Writers Association.
A Bronx, N.Y. native, Grant scored four times in Rhody Football’s historic 35-21 victory over Bryant, which secured the team its first-ever CAA Football title and first league title since 1985. A graduate transfer out of Sacred Heart, Grant rushed for 204 yards with touchdown runs of 13, 1 and 2 yards. He also added a 4-yard receiving score, his first as a Ram, as one of his two catches for 16 added yards.
Grant’s 13 rushing touchdowns on the season tie the Rhode Island single-season record set by Ja’Den McKenzie in 2023. He also became the 10th URI player to score 24 points in a game.
He shared the CAA Football nod with Monmouth quarterback Derek Robertson. He is the fifth Ram to receive a weekly award from the league this season, joining quarterback Devin Farrell (Offensive Player of the Week – Sept. 2), linebacker A.J. Pena (Defensive Player of the Week – Sept. 16), linebacker Gabe Salomons (Special Teams Player of the Week – Oct. 14) and defensive back Fredrick Mallay (Defensive Player of the Week – Oct. 21).
Grant is the first Ram to earn a Gold Helmet Award since former quarterback Kasim Hill did so on Sept. 20, 2021.
