EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) – It’s the most wonderful time of the year and also the most stressful, especially if you are having trouble finding that perfect holiday gift for the people on your list. Let me offer a few suggestions for that knife, tool and gadget enthusiast you may be shopping for. This column is inspired by my good friend and co-worker, Luisa Barrios. For the past couple of years, she has picked my brain about gifts to give to her male family members. In keeping with that, I will try to stay in the budget realm of things. What is EDC? Here is a look at some daily carry items Those of you who regularly read this column know that my holy trinity of knives are Buck, Victorinox (Swiss Army) and Cold Steel. With Buck, it is hard to go wrong with some of their traditional favorites like the 110 Folding Hunter or its little sister, the 112 Ranger.  Buck 112 Slim Select, top, and Buck 110 LT on a Junkin Genius hank. Photo by Dave Burge For EDC purposes, I prefer the 110 LT, which is made of lightweight molded nylon, which dramatically reduces the 110’s weight. As for the 112, I carry the Slim Select version, which is also made of molded nylon. The 112 Slim Select comes with a pocket clip, making it even more convenient for everyday carry. The Buck 110 LT currently lists for $37.99 on the Buck website. The Buck 112 Slim Select is going for $39.99 on the Buck website. Rough Edge EDC: Adding a couple of new knives from an old favorite company Of course, it is that time of year when retailers offer some discounts, so check the Buck website for any special offers. I have also had great luck saving money on Buck Knives by ordering from Chicago Knife Works. Now, on to Swiss Army Knives.  Of course, the Classic SD is the obvious choice here, though I don’t personally own one. This knife is billed as the top-selling knife in the world – and is super handy with its keychain size.  It comes with a small pen blade, nail file that can be used as a small screwdriver and the ultra useful scissors. The Classic SD comes in many different flavors and covers. They can range from $24 to $40 on the Victorinox website.  My personal favorite SAK is the Recruit, super simple, super basic. I call it my “Corona and lime” knife. The Recruit comes with two blades and separate can and bottle openers, which can both be used as screwdrivers. The Recruit lists for $25 on the Victorinox site. Next, up: Let’s take a quick look at Cold Steel Knife and Tool. This American company was originally founded in Ventura, California, but is now based in Irving, Texas. It is known for creating strong, durable, sharp knives. Fenix E05R keychain flashlight and Cold Steel Double Safe Hunter on a Junkin Genius hank. Photo by Dave Burge/KTSM One of my favorites is the Double Safe Hunter, which comes in on the Cold Steel website ranging from $31.99 to $34.99. Cold Steel always has offers going for discounts, too. For some higher-end knives, you can visit C. Risner Cutlery. This family-owned American business specializes in traditional pocket knives, hence the name of their website, traditionalpocketknives.com.  Rough Edge EDC: Olight Seeker 4 like having a searchlight in your hand Check out their exclusive knives, the sale tab and their selection of RoseCraft knives. Of course, there is much more to EDC than knives. For starters, you need a good flashlight. I’m an Olight kind of guy. I prefer their smaller i3T (AAA battery) and i5T (AA battery) for everyday carry.  Olight i3T 2 and i5T flashlights. Photo by Dave Burge/KTSM Of course, they also offer some great larger lights. I have the Warrior Mini 3 and the Seeker 4, which I use when I go out late to walk one of the dogs or if I need to go out in our backyard after dark. The Seeker 4 is currently out of stock, but Olight does have its cousin, the Seeker 4 Pro, and the Seeker 4 Mini available on its website. Olight is currently having a Black Friday sale going on through Dec. 3.  Rough Edge EDC: Notebooks, pens help make EDC complete I would be remiss if I didn’t mention Fenix. I have a Fenix E05R keychain flashlight. It is rechargeable, is my only non-Olight flashlight and is among my favorite pieces of gear. As for pens, here are some handy links – Everyman, Refyne and Bastion. All three make wonderful pens and are offering Black Friday sales and discounts. Here are some links for some EDC wallets – Wayfinder Carry, Open Sea Leather and Recycled Firefighter. I have been carrying a Wayfinder Flux minimalist wallet for almost a year now. Initially, I wanted to explore different wallets as part of my EDC journey in 2024, but couldn’t justify taking the Flux out of my pocket. Rite in the Rain On-the-Go notebook, mechanical pencil and pen with a Wayfinder Flux wallet. Photo by Dave Burge/KTSM Another company I am big on is Rite in the Rain. This American company has been around for more than 100 years and specializes in all-weather pens, pencils, notebooks and other gear for people who are outdoors and need to keep working, no matter what the weather. Rough Edge EDC: Celebrating an all-weather company that does things ‘rite’ Currently, Rite in the Rain has 20 percent off everything and 60 percent off selected sale items. The sale lasts until Dec. 12. Use code HOLIDAY24 at checkout. And to top everything off, you need a hank to clean your gear and to show off your knives, flashlights and tools for those social media displays. My favorite is Junkin Genius, which makes some great handmade hanks with a huge array of designs and themes. You can find them on Instagram. Hope that makes your shopping for your favorite tool and knife enthusiast a little easier.
