The Colorado Avalanche Information Center (CAIC) is warning travelers of increased avalanche danger through the high country this week. As of Monday, Nov. 25 afternoon, CAIC forecasters released a statement saying that they are particularly worried that they will see the most dangerous avalanche conditions they've seen so far this season on Tuesday, Nov. 26, and Wednesday, Nov. 27 especially with more people than usual getting out to recreate and travel the mountain passes. As of Monday, there is an avalanche watch in effect for the West Elk Mountains from Tuesday night through Wednesday. That area includes crested Crested Butte, Gunnison, and Carbondale. While there is only one avalanche watch as of Monday, it is possible that other mountain ranges along the I-70 corridor and San Juans could have an avalanche watch on it as well as this week, and for good reason. Rapid and heavy snowfall is expected Tuesday night into Wednesday where it is forecasting 1 to 2 feet for the I-70 corridor and 2 to 3 feet for parts of the Central Mountains and San Juans. The Fox21 Storm Team will monitor conditions and let you know as soon as we know an avalanche has occurred but here are some things you can do to stay safe on the roads if you do encounter an avalanche while on any of the passes this week. If you can help it, avoid traveling on the mountain passes if you can. If you can't, try to pack provisions like snacks, water, extra blankets, and coats to keep you warm. If your car is hit by an avalanche, stay in the car with your windows rolled up. Don't try to open the doors and dig out. It is likely that if one avalanche was triggered, another one could happen right after the first one. In addition to staying in the car, make sure to turn off your vehicle to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning. If you have cell signal, call for help immediately.
