MINOT, ND (KXNET) — The First District Health Unit (FDHU) has been selected to receive an $850,000 grant that aims to reduce alcohol consumption among young adults. The Partnership for Success (PFS) grant is given by the North Dakota Behavioral Health Division to prevent underage drinking for at-risk populations. Five North Dakota public health units received grants. Populations defined by the FDHU as being at-risk include college students, active-duty military members and their families, and children of parents with substance use or mental health challenges. The grant, which is funded by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), supports community-based programs looking to prevent and reduce substance misuse. ND Sober Ride back for Thanksgiving First District aims to reduce youth alcohol use by targeting its root causes through prevention, education, and intervention.  “We are committed to using these funds to create lasting change in our community,” said Holly Brekhus, Executive Director of First District. “With this grant, we will be able to further our mission of reducing alcohol consumption and its harmful effects on young people. By partnering with local stakeholders and using data-driven strategies, we will work to ensure that our efforts are both effective and sustainable.” The FDHU warns that excessive alcohol use can lead to many negative long-term outcomes, including impaired decision-making, which can lead to academic failure and risky behaviors. It can also increase the risk for addiction later in life. Close Thanks for signing up! Watch for us in your inbox. Subscribe Now Today's Top Stories SIGN UP NOW
