CENTRAL, La. (BRPROUD) — A local roadway in Central has become a safety concern for residents and city officials. Greenwell Springs Road, a busy stretch between Denham Springs and Hooper Road, has become a hotspot for accidents, including some deadly crashes in recent months. Now, local police and the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) are working to address the dangers and prevent further tragedies. Chief Roger Corcoran of the Central Police Department said speeding and distracted driving are major contributors to the crashes. “This vehicle here is clearly not going 45 miles an hour, but we’re going to write those people tickets,” Corcoran said while standing near the roadway. In addition to enforcing speed limits, Corcoran is urging drivers to be especially cautious during the busy holiday season. “Slow down, please," said Corcoran. "This is the holiday season. We’re going to have extra people coming through here, and I’m going to try to put extra officers out there.” DOTD officials emphasized that wearing seatbelts is a simple but critical step to save lives. “We can reduce by at least 40% the number of fatalities if we would all just wear our seatbelts,” said Rodney Mallett, Public Information Director for DOTD. While immediate safety measures are underway, DOTD has announced long-term plans to improve the road itself. A nearly $2 million project is set to begin in 2025, targeting safety upgrades along 20 miles of Greenwell Springs Road. “We’re going to install some safety features to our rural roads. Greenwell Springs is part of that,” Mallett explained. Police are stepping up patrols, but drivers are urged to follow speed limits, stay alert, and buckle up. With enforcement and upcoming infrastructure improvements, residents and officials hope to see a safer future for this well-traveled roadway.
