350 Thanksgiving baskets distributed in Oildale

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) -- The Bakersfield North Rotary Club kicked off Thanksgiving week with its 24th annual giveaway Monday.
Sandra Apellido was the first one in line at Monday's distribution.
"I woke up at 6:30 a.m. and I thought 'I'm going to come an hour early, but I actually came an hour and a half early because I looked at the card wrong," said Sandra Apellido, grandmother of a Standard Middle student. "But I'm glad I did!"
There were much needed ingredients distributed at Monday's event.
"I get up at 6 a.m. on Thanksgiving morning and start preparing the turkey and all that, you know," said Sandra Apellido. "I try to make the salad a day before."
Assembling 350 Thanksgiving boxes in just one hour, was no magic, but the expertise of doing it for so many years. Plus the help of volunteers dedicated to give back to Oildale.
"I have personally seen a lot of the work that's happened here in the last several years," said Carlos Baldovinos, President of North Rotary Club. "I also think there's a lot of opportunity too for the coming years to do a lot more. But stuff like this that happens, you know, this assembly of the boxes, this really shows what community is all about."
That sense of community is more important than ever. As holidays can be challenging times for families.
"We lost our mother a couple of months ago, so she's not with us this year, but we're truly blessed to have each other," said Sandra Apellido.
