MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Md. (DC News Now) – At So What Else in North Bethesda, it's known for helping thousands of families in need of food assistance each week. Now, the organization is looking to help thousands more during its week-long Thanksgiving Giveback food giveaway.
It’s a busy day at the So What Else food distribution facility. Volunteers are working hard and moving fast to make sure families have what they need ahead of Thanksgiving.
“We have clients coming for food appointments,” Chris Yonushonis, So What Else’s deputy director for hunger relief, said. “We’re also bringing in massive amounts of food that we’re giving to partner groups that we work with who have their own food distributions.”

Yonushonis said families will have options at the dinner table.
“We’ve got pork, turkey, chicken, beef that we’re giving away today," he said. "We have fresh produce including pineapples, cucumbers, tomatoes, milk – oat milk and dairy milk.”
Yonushonis said the organization has seen the need for food assistance increase significantly across the county since last year.
“Since last October,” he said. "We’ve gone from 700 clients to 1,900 clients.”
Because of this, the organization is striving to help as many families as possible for Thanksgiving.
“Our goal is to serve 24,000 families over the past week,” Yonushonis said, “The week before Thanksgiving. We’ve at least done 15,000.”
Volunteers said it feels good knowing they’re making a difference. They say helping their neighbors is truly what the holiday season is all about.
“It actually is a blessing to where we can help the little babies, the little kids that are in need and the elderly people and most of all, a lot of people in general," volunteer Shanavier Walker said.
