Trenton Police Director Steve Wilson responds to DoJ investigation
Nov 25, 2024
Trenton Police released the following statement in the late afternoon Monday, Nov. 25 in response to the release of the U.S. Department of Justice and the U.S. Attorney’s Office Nov. 21 report finding that the Trenton Police violated the Constitutional rights of citizens.
Earlier Monday, the Trenton NAACP called for the dismissal of Police Director Steve Wilson among other reforms at a press conference in front of TPD headquarters.
The statement credited to Wilson said:
The Trenton Police Department (TPD) appreciates that the recent Department of Justice (DOJ) report has raised concerns within the community and also recognizes that organizations such as the NAACP have a right to express their opinions about the police department. The Trenton Police Department is continually striving to improve public safety and earn the public’s trust.
As recommended in the DOJ report, we are reviewing our policies and procedures to ensure that our officers not only conduct themselves in a manner that respects the constitutional rights of the public but holds TPD personnel accountable for their actions. TPD is also examining its training needs and will look to ensure that all TPD personnel employ best practices. We are already working with and receiving training from the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office to address issues with searches and seizures as they arise.
Similarly, officers from our Daytime Task Force completed Critical Incident Training, which we will extend to all officers upon receipt of adequate funding. The Daytime Task Force is our outreach unit that works with Recovery Advocates, conducting street meets with the unhoused and individuals suffering from addictions. The Daytime Task Force is also part of the New Jersey Attorney General’s Arrive Together Program in partnership with Capital Health Systems. This program allows law enforcement and mental health professionals to respond together, interact with, evaluate, and provide resources for individuals in need of mental health and other social services.
The manner in which TPD delivers public safety services to the Trenton community is paramount. We are committed to allowing Trentonians to live their lives without fear of crime or other threats to their safety, while respecting people’s rights.
