EASTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP) - Two family dogs died after accidentally turning on a stove, causing a kitchen fire in Easthampton on Monday afternoon.
According to officials, the fire, which originated in the kitchen, was caused by combustible materials left on a stove that was accidentally turned on by the pets.

Easthampton Public Safety received a call about the fire at approximately 3:15 p.m. Easthampton Police and Fire crews arrived to find smoke coming from the structure. Firefighters entered the home and located evidence of a fire in the kitchen that had self-extinguished.
Using heat detection equipment, firefighters identified fire extensions in the attic. Crews removed the kitchen ceiling to fully extinguish the fire. Despite the efforts of first responders, two family dogs died from smoke inhalation.
An investigation conducted by Easthampton Fire and Police determined the fire began when the stove was accidentally activated by the pets, igniting materials left on the appliance. Mutual aid was provided by Northampton Fire Rescue, Southampton Fire, and Barnes Aire National Guard, who assisted in containing and extinguishing the fire.
“Please keep this family in your thoughts during this time,” Easthampton Public Safety said in a statement. “All of us at Easthampton Public Safety are extremely sorry for the losses that this family experienced.”
Officials reminded residents of the importance of keeping stoves clear of flammable materials and ensuring that pets cannot access appliances.
