New Parker Street traffic lane raises concerns in Springfield
Nov 25, 2024
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - New roadwork in Springfield is causing some neighbors to raise concerns but the City of Springfield says it may just take some time for drivers to get used to.
Workers just completed a new center lane on Parker Street a week ago and are hoping to better the traffic flow in the area.
City officials say this will reduce traffic and drivers' speed. However, some residents believe people are using the new lane to pass drivers wanting to make a left or right turn instead. The city believes it will take some time for drivers to adjust and will be monitoring the area.
Springfield DPW Director Chris Cignoli told 22News, "We have also talked to the police about doing some enforcement out there as well so they're going to be out this week and probably next week these types of center lanes that we've done it on Fort Pleasant Avenue and its been on Boston Road for 30 plus years out there."
New signs are expected to be put up in the area very soon reminding drivers of the rules of the road. This isn't the only center turn lane in the City of Springfield. We see them on busy streets like Boston Road as well. If you or someone you know drives down Parker Street often, be aware of the new lane, reduce your speed, and avoid being distracted while driving.
