Two arrested for trespassing in Strathmore Mill building

RUSSELL, Mass. (WWLP) - A man and woman were arrested for trespassing inside the old Strathmore Mill #2 building in Russell on Sunday afternoon.

According to the Russell-Montgomery Police Department, officers received reports of individuals trespassing in the vacant mill building. Upon arrival, police, with assistance from state police, discovered a man and woman inside the structure.
The suspects, identified as Thomas Menard of Danielson, CT, and Deborah Fisk of Guilford, CT, were taken into custody on charges of criminal trespass. Both individuals were arraigned Monday morning in Westfield District Court.
Just two weeks ago, three construction workers were injured after a building partially collapsed at the same building. Residents are being asked to avoid the area for safety purposes. Woronoco Road is closed to through traffic until further notice and unauthorized individuals in the area are subject to arrest.
About Strathmore MillThe former Strathmore Paper Company dates back to 1914, but the history of the company and its founder begins in the 1800s. Horace A. Moses founded the Mittineague Paper Mill in West Springfield, which eventually, after many changes, merged with Woronoco Paper Company and formed the Strathmore Paper Company.International Paper closed the Strathmore Paper Company’s mill complex in the 1990s after a change of owners.The mill complex has been vacant for around 30 years, but in the past four years, there were two separate fires. In 2020, mill number two burned for days after the paper left behind caught fire, and in 2022, there was another fire in the complex impacting mill number three and one.
