MANCHESTER, N.H. (WPRI) — Annette Roberge can finally call herself a college graduate. The 90-year-old Manchester, New Hampshire, woman crossed the stage to get her diploma over the weekend 50 years after finishing her degree. "I'm still on cloud nine," Roberge said. "I can't even put it into words. It was exhilarating, it was awesome, it was beyond anything I could've possibly imagined." She began taking classes at New Hampshire College, which is now Southern New Hampshire University, in 1972 — one year after her husband of 20 years was killed in Vietnam. She completed several night and weekend courses before it had to take a back seat for her five kids and two jobs. Roberge worked as an insurance agent and finished as a lunch lad at a nearby school. At age 75 she retired, but for the woman who loved learning, she knew something was missing from her life. When her daughter started poking around, she learned her mom had enough credits for an associate's degree in business administration. "Never give up on learning, what you learn, can never be taken away from you," Roberge said. "Don't let it just sit there, do something, make it work, and never give up on a dream." Roberge isn't satisfied with her associate's degree and plans to start working toward her bachelor's degree in January. Close Thanks for signing up! Watch for us in your inbox.
