New Orleans Public Library launches first library vending machine
Nov 25, 2024
Residents of the Desire neighborhood near the New Orleans Recreation Development (NORD) Commission Desire Florida Multi-Service Center were treated to a new library vending machine housed within its facility.
Located at 3250 Industry St., the vending machine is recognized as a satellite location for the New Orleans Public Library. It serves a community absent of a physical library.
It offers 235 books and a DVD collection for library card holders in the Ninth Ward community. It gives the ability to check out and return items during the NORD Center’s operating hours, similar to a physical library experience.
“One of the core pillars of our 10-year strategic plan to create a Library lifestyle for all New Orleanians is to open doors through reimagining our spaces, which is exactly what this collaboration with NORD allows us to do,” Emily Painton, City librarian and executive director of The New Orleans Public Library Board of Directors, said in a news release. “We’d love to have a Library location in every neighborhood in the city, but by putting technology like this in an underserved area, we’re removing an immediate barrier to accessing our services.”
Items stocked in the vending machine target patrons of all ages. The vending machine requires the use of a physical library card and the NORD Center is Wi-Fi accessible.
