Unsettled weather pattern sticks around heading toward Thanksgiving
Nov 25, 2024
After a nice finish to the weekend with sunshine and highs around 60 degrees, it was a cloudy start to Thanksgiving week on Monday as a frontal system to our west made a run for the Ohio Valley. It was dry for much of the day with afternoon highs still reaching the upper 50s and low 60s thanks to a breezy southwest wind. As the front moves through the commonwealth during the early hours of Tuesday, scattered rain with a few rumbles of thunder will be possible across the area before the showers taper off and end before daybreak.
Sunshine is set to return on Tuesday as drier air moves back into the region thanks to high pressure building in from the southwest. Temperatures will be cooler behind the front with afternoon highs only topping out in the upper 40s despite the expected sunshine but it should be a pleasant day by late November standards. If you are doing some early holiday travel, conditions should be nice for it but that should change as we draw closer to Thanksgiving.
Another storm system will ramp up in the Central Plains into the mid-week increasing our rain chances heading into the long holiday weekend. Much of Wednesday looks dry with highs back into the low 50s. The deeper we get into the day, the better chance we’ll see showers developing. Those holiday travelers leaving early on Wednesday should be in good shape but do expect to run into some rain if you are heading west or north on Wednesday.
The most likely window for wet conditions should be Wednesday night and into Thanksgiving as the main surface cold front moves through the area. Turkey Day will start out damp before the rain comes to an end but it will be a raw and blustery day thanks to the cooler temperatures and breezy conditions. Afternoon highs will struggle to get into the mid-40s and the brisk northwest wind will make it feel even colder.
The big story for Black Friday and the remainder of the holiday weekend will be the potential for the coldest air of the season moving into the region. Early bird shoppers will need to dress accordingly with morning lows expected to drop well into the 20s to begin the day. Luckily it looks to be dry with some sunshine through the day but temperatures will be unseasonably chilly with afternoon highs only reaching the low to mid-30s. The second half of the holiday weekend will remain cold with sunshine and highs in the mid-30s Saturday so you’ll want to dress warmly if you are heading to Kroger Field Saturday afternoon as the Cats close out the 2024 football season battling Louisville for the Governor’s Cup.
A secondary front on Saturday will bring a reinforcing shot of colder air into the Ohio Valley so expect the unseasonably cold air to stick around. Early morning lows could drop into the teens with afternoon highs remaining in the low to mid-30s. Some of the data is picking up on a weak mid-level wave sliding through Sunday, which could squeeze out a few snow showers to close the holiday weekend so we’ll keep an eye on that.
