GIBSONVILLE, N.C. (WGHP) -- A Guilford County family plans to hold their annual Turkey Bowl in memory of their 6-year-old son who lost his life in a car accident in 2021. This is their fourth year hosting the annual event through the organization founded by Cameron Robertson’s parents in remembrance of their son. Cameron was six years old when he passed away. His mom Kia Robertson says he loved sports and participated in many. While grieving, his parents launched this annual event for other young kids like their son in remembrance of him. “This is a legacy, and it makes me feel really good knowing that ... people will remember our son,” Kia said. Cameron played several sports like football, basketball and soccer. “He was a fun and loving little boy. He loved sports. He loved friends and family. He loved the Grinch ... We now have everything Grinch.” Kia said. Cameron died in a car accident in Sept. 2021. It happened at the intersection of NC 100 and Kivett House Road when he was leaving football practice. His parents launched Cameron’s Sports Academy in his memory. “Our mission is to be a positive impact and create a positive environment for kids," Kia said. Their annual Turkey Bowl has been held since the organization was launched in 2021. It’s always held the day after Thanksgiving at the Gibsonville Community Center. It’s usually a flag football game with kids participating. This year, they’re doing something new. It will be a kickball game, and adults will also be able to play. “My husband came up with Turkey Bowl because he said he used to play in lots of events right after Thanksgiving. It's just a good way to get everybody together right after the Thanksgiving holidays and also be thankful for things,” Kia said. The family is still hurting from the loss of Cameron. His mother said the annual event is another way to show their thanks this holiday season. “It turns my grief and my pain into happiness and being thankful that we still have three daughters ... We still have lots of Cameron friends, and we're meeting new friends with each event. So it just makes me feel really good, and my husband as well,” Kia said,. The annual Turkey Bowl held in Cameron’s memory will be Friday from 9 a.m. to noon at the Gibsonville Community Center. To register, you can contact Cameron Sports Academy via email at [email protected]. You can also register by contacting the Gibsonville Community Center. The organization utilizes donations for its mission. Donations can be made on their website or via Paypal using their email.
