ASHEBORO, N.C. (WGHP) -- This Thanksgiving, one Asheboro teenager is thankful for her family after she was adopted a few months ago.
The holidays have not always been full of good memories for 16-year-old Calliope Farlow. This year, times have changed, and she wants to spread her Christmas cheer to others who are less fortunate.
“She talks and sings and lights up,” Farlow said as she held a Minnie Mouse toy.
Farlow wants to brighten up the holidays.
“I have got a couple outfits and some more toys and stuff like that and blankets and things,” Farlow said.
She used her own money and a little extra cash from friends and family.
“I still need to do some more shopping,” Farlow said.
This Christmas, she will give the gift of a good Christmas to four kids in her community.
It’s something personal for her as her Christmases weren’t always very merry and bright.
“I grew up in a very much broken home. Both of my parents were drug addicts from the time I was born,” Farlow said.
She was passed around to different family members for years before entering foster care.
“When I was in foster care it was, 'What does the social worker provide?' And usually, that wasn’t very much. Maybe a sweater, a pair of crocks or something, but it was never a little kid would dream of,” Farlow said.
She wants to make those dreams come true for other kids. It starts with a toy but comes with a lifelong lesson.
“It means that I am breaking the generational curse. That is something that I have always wanted to do growing up. I was told, 'You will never be. You will never measure up more than your parents' or, 'You are just one person' … One person can make a difference for an entire generation,” Farlow said.
This holiday season, she is ready to shine her light on others who need something extra bright.
“No matter what you are going through in life, there is always a better side of it,” Farlow said.
She plans to drop off all the gifts in the next couple of weeks. She has plans to give more presents at Easter.
