(COLORADO SPRINGS) — A Denver man has been arrested in Colorado Springs after a tip led to the discovery of over 650,000 fentanyl pills hidden in suitcases and backpacks. According to the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), someone in Albuquerque, NM alerted authorities to two "suspicious men" who were traveling by bus to Denver. The DEA said one of the men became nervous and ran, leaving behind two large suitcases. The Albuquerque Police Department responded to seize the abandoned suitcases, and a search warrant resulted in the seizure of approximately 330,000 fentanyl pills and two ounces of heroin. The second man continued on the Denver-bound bus with his own two suitcases. The DEA said its office in Colorado Springs was contacted, and it detained the second man in Colorado Springs. A K-9 with the Colorado Springs Police Department alerted to the presence of narcotics in the man's suitcases and backpack. A search warrant on the man's bags resulted in an additional 340,000 fentanyl pills and several thousand dollars in cash. “The number of fentanyl pills seized in this case is almost enough to give every resident in thecity of Denver one fake pill,” said DEA Rocky Mountain Field Division Special Agent in ChargeJonathan Pullen. The DEA added that the amount of pills seized in this one case equates to about 25% of Colorado's fake pill seizures for all of 2023. “This is a prime example of see something, say something,” said Pullen. “As a result, 670,000 fake pills are now off the streets of Colorado and New Mexico.” The suspect in custody was later identified as a fugitive from Denver, wanted on outstandingdrug trafficking warrants.
