NORTH DAKOTA (KXNET) — The North Dakota Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (ND DOCR) has received a grant dedicated to giving education and employment opportunities to incarcerated individuals when they reenter society. The 2024 Second Chance Act Grant on Improving Reentry Education and Employment Outcomes comes from the Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA), and will provide ND DOCR residents with the opportunity to pursue secondary education. The grant will partner with local colleges and universities to offer residents the chance to earn online degrees or certificates while still incarcerated. According to the press release, research shows that education is crucial to reducing recidivism rates. Studies indicate that those who participate in educational programs while in prison are 43% less likely to return than those who do not. HHS hosts prevention events around opioid and substance use “Education is a powerful tool that can transform lives,” said Charlie Hedden, Grants Manager for the ND DOCR in the release. “This grant will not only equip our incarcerated individuals with essential skills and knowledge but also provide them with a pathway to a brighter future. By partnering with local educational institutions, we are building a support network that fosters success and reduces the likelihood of reoffending.” In addition to its educational goals, the program is expected to help people find employment, reduce their dependency on public assistance, and help them contribute to safer communities. The press release says this is a significant step towards breaking the cycle of incarceration and fostering a more just and equitable society. To learn more about the DOCR, visit docr.nd.gov.
