1 dead in north Austin homicide; person of interest in custody

AUSTIN (KXAN) -- Austin police are investigating a north Austin homicide where one man died Monday.
A person of interest is in custody, an Austin Police Department spokesperson said.
Police said officers responded to a shoot/stab urgent call around 1:39 p.m. in a wooded area behind a strip mall on Parmer Lane. Officers found a male in his 40s with apparent gunshot wounds.
Police said the man died at the scene after attempting life-saving measures.

A person of interest was detained, and homicide detectives are interviewing the person, police said. Preliminary details found that the victim and suspect are unhoused. Their relationship was not known.
Police said this was an isolated incident with no known threat to the public.
Multiple APD units were at the scene investigating Monday afternoon. Police are investigating the death as Austin's 64th homicide in 2024.
