Hutch apartment without sprinklers or working smoke alarms catches fire, cause under investigation

HUTCHINSON, Kan. (KSNW) - An investigation is underway after an apartment fire in Hutchinson Sunday morning.
According to the Hutchinson Fire Department, crews responded to the report of a structure fire with fire showing in the 1200 block of N. Severance St. around 11:20 a.m.
Upon arrival, crews found a row apartment with heavy fire and smoke pushing out of the windows of one apartment. The fire was also venting from the attic above the apartment.

Firefighters began attacking the fire from the outside and entered the apartment. Other firefighters were able to remove all occupants from the other six apartments. A passerby who called in the fire started the evacuation.
According to the HFD, the structure did not have a sprinkler system or working smoke alarms.

The fire only caused heavy damage to one apartment and the attic space.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
