Nov 25, 2024
BOSTON (WWLP) - The 2024 election in November was the second-highest number of ballots cast in Massachusetts history, the state secretary's office announced.
Secretary of State William Galvin expected voter turnout in Tuesday’s election to exceed the nearly 3.7 million who voted in 2020 however, the official certified election results showed that 3,512,866 people voted in Massachusetts for the presidential election.

“The turnout in Massachusetts appears to reflect a national trend, with a significant drop in participation in several of our cities, especially those with larger minority populations, and a slightly smaller rise in turnout in the more rural and suburban areas of the state,” Galvin said.
According to Galvin’s office, the City of Chelsea saw a 16.7 percent drop in the number of ballots cast, when compared with the 2020 election, while Everett, Randolph, Revere, Malden, Lynn, and Boston all saw a decrease of more than 10 percent from that election.
Among Massachusetts voters, 61 percent voted for Kamala Harris and 36 percent cast their ballot for Donald Trump.
“Citizens in Massachusetts are now registered to vote when they renew a driver’s license or sign up for health insurance through the Health Connector. As a result, simply looking at the percentage of registered voters who voted, in comparison to previous elections, would give a false impression of a significant decline in statewide turnout,” Galvin explained. “The number of registered voters in Massachusetts is at a record high, at over 5 million.”
The most votes in Massachusetts history was during the 2020 election which was when Joe Biden defeated Donald Trump at the height of the coronavirus pandemic. The voter turnout for Massachusetts during that race was 3,657,972 ballots that were cast.
