HAMMOND, La. (WGNO)—Jousting is a decades-long tradition at the Louisiana Renaissance Festival. Crowds love watching this medieval sport that puts knights up against each other in combat.
WGNO's Kenny Lopez headed to The Joust Arena to watch the New Riders of the Golden Age fight!
On horses, with their jousting spears called "lances", shields, and armor, these knights are ready to "joust do it!"

"As soon as they make contact, you can hear that clang," Blade Warr, Jousting watcher said.
"In layman's terms, we wear a trash can, get on a really big horse, grab a really long stick, and ride at one another with the intention of breaking those sticks or knocking someone off the horse," Sir William Dudley, Jouster for The New Riders of the Golden Age said.
"They are going to crash," Warr said.
When they get knocked down, the knights get back up again, continuing to joust. Sir William Dudley's been jousting for 25 years.

"We're able to go out and do what we do best, but we are also performing for an audience," Dudley said.
He went on to say, "For me, it is just a day at the office and it is a fun day at the office, don't get me wrong."
In this match, Sir William Dudley came out victorious.
"I'm used to it. I'm a champion for a reason. Everyone wants to knock me down, but it never goes their way," Dudley said.

"I thought it was cool. I've never seen jousting before," Maddie Fontenot, a Jousting watcher said.
"I love the physicality, it's like an old-time sport for all of us," Warr said.
"The audience clearly had fun and that's always my goal," Dudley said.
