Last Thursday, the Planning Commission voted to disapprove a Zoning Ordinance Text Amendment (ZOTA) that would have allowed for digital billboards to be built in Lexington. Council sent the ZOTA to the Planning Commission for consideration back in September. The reasons for the Planning Commission’s disapproval include worries over digital billboards leading to distracted driving and increased light pollution that could come with digital billboards. Currently, digital billboards are not permitted in Lexington at all. In January, Council will have their final vote on the ZOTA. It is unclear how digital billboards will fare in January. Given that only two Councilmembers on the General Government and Planning Committee voted against advancing digital billboard rules in September, Council may overrule the Planning Commission and approve their use in Lexington. That said, they could also concur with the Planning Commission, disapproving the ZOTA and keeping digital billboards banned in Lexington.
