Survey: Most Hoosiers support 'reasonable legalization' of marijuana

INDIANAPOLIS -- A survey from a new marijuana-focused coalition states that most Indiana residents support "responsible legalization of marijuana" in the state.
A new survey from Safe and Regulated Indiana states that 70% of Hoosier respondents said they support legalizing marijuana for adults over the age of 21, 49% of whim said they strongly support it. In the survey, 27% of respondents said that they oppose the legalization of marijuana.
According to previous reports, Safe and Regulated Indiana is a coalition that is centered on raising awareness for Indiana lawmakers to pass marijuana-related legislation. The group advocates or the regulation and taxation of marijuana like tobacco and alcohol, including individuals, business owners, veterans and advocates from across Indiana.
In the survey, 58% of respondents stated that they would be more likely to support their state legislator for reelection if they voted in favor of marijuana legislation, according to a news release from the group.
New Indiana coalition calls for safe, regulated marijuana policy
Support also came from across the political spectrum. According to the survey, 58% of Republicans support marijuana legalization while 89% of Democrats support legalization.
“This survey confirms what we already know. Hoosiers are overwhelmingly united behind safe and regulated marijuana policy,” Joe Elsener, spokesperson for Safe and Regulated Indiana and a former official with the Indiana Republican Party, said in the release. “Indiana voters strongly support legalization for adults 21+ and taxing and regulating marijuana just like alcohol. They want responsible legalization because they know it means safer streets, shutting down drug dealers, and keeping tax revenue here in our state.”
The release said that the group surveyed 1,252 registered voters in Indiana between Oct. 30 and Nov. 3. The results yielded a margin of error of +/- 2.8%.
