FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) - A Fort Wayne man will avoid prison time for his role in a shooting that witnesses said was fueled by road rage and left the victim paralyzed. On Monday, a judge in Allen Superior Court handed Channing Davenport, 31, a two-year sentence. Court documents show the first year will be spent in a residential center and probation will take the place of a second year. Davenport had been charged with felony aggravated battery in the Sept. 22, 2023 shooting that started as an argument with another driver. According to Allen Superior Court documents, three witnesses told investigators an SUV, driven by the victim, pulled out in front of Davenport’s van at the intersection of Lima and Production roads around 5 p.m. The victim then walked up to the van and began arguing with Davenport, witnesses said in court documents. The argument escalated and witnesses told police they saw Davenport “pistol whip” the victim with a gun. The gun went off, shooting the victim in the neck. Davenport hit the van with his hand out of frustration, court documents said, and he told one of the witnesses to call 911. I did not mean to shoot him.” One witness said in court documents Davenport then began to render aid to the victim. A doctor at the hospital said the victim’s spinal cord was severed because of the gunshot wound, leaving him paralyzed. Davenport pleaded guilty to criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon, and charges of aggravated battery along with two more counts of battery resulting in serious injury were dismissed.
