CSP surge enforcement day planned ahead of Thanksgiving
Nov 25, 2024
(COLORADO) — On Wednesday, Nov. 27, the Colorado State Patrol (CSP) along with various law enforcement agencies will be conducting a statewide surge enforcement day and will be on the lookout for any distracted or aggressive drivers, in addition to the usual speedsters.
On Wednesday, law enforcement will also be on the lookout for impaired drivers who fail to make a plan for a sober ride home.
"Don’t let your travels over the coming weeks contradict the gratitude and unity that defines the holiday season,” said Col. Matthew C. Packard, Chief of the Colorado State Patrol. “Drivers should anticipate heavy amounts of traffic leading up to Thanksgiving and again over the weekend. Pack your patience and drive with kindness.”
Last year, troopers responded to 85 crashes the day before Thanksgiving, and according to CSP, most were caused by lane violations, careless/reckless driving such as tailgating, and speeding.
This year, law enforcement aims to target specific areas around the state that experience increased traffic volume during the holidays. Some areas that will see heavier law enforcement presence include Highways 30, 40, 50, 160, and 287, along with the I-70, I-76, and I-25 corridors.
To avoid a citation, CSP recommends:
Follow the speed limit, and if conditions or circumstances call for it, drive at a slower safer speed.
Poor weather, traffic, construction zones, crash scenes, sun glare, wildlife, and any activity on the right shoulder are circumstances that could call for a slower rate of speed.
Put down all distractions.
The "Hands-Free" law begins Jan. 1, get in the habit now.
See an aggressive driver? Distance yourself, keep your cool, and do not make eye contact.
Have a passenger call *CSP and report the driver.
This holiday season, ensure every chair is filled with the loved one you expect to see this year and practice safe, responsible driving.
