MAPLETON, ND (KXNET) — Ice and wind are being blamed in a four-vehicle crash near Mapleton Sunday night.
According to the North Dakota Highway Patrol, Interstate 94 was ice-covered in an area two miles west of Mapleton and crosswinds were blowing across the highway.
Around 11:30 p.m., November 24, a 42-year-old Hopkins, Minnesota man driving a Freightliner with a box trailer lost control on the road, jack-knifed and ended up in the highway median. Part of the trailer remained on the highway.
A 35-year-old Bismarck man driving a Volvo with double-box trailers came upon the scene and tried to brake, losing control on the icy road. His vehicle jack-knifed and also entered the median, with two trailers blocking a highway lane.
A 26-year-old West Fargo woman driving an SUV then came upon the crash scene, struck part of the second truck and became disabled on the roadway. The woman left the vehicle and moved away to a ditch.
Soon, a 73-year-old Avonlea, Sakatchewan man driving a Western Star truck with a sand trailer arrived, attempted to brake, jack-knifed and crashed into the SUV. Both the truck and the SUV went into the ditch.
The drivers of the SUV and the third truck were taken to the hospital for treatment of minor injuries. The other drivers and passengers were not hurt in the multi-vehicle collisions.
The vehicles blocked the eastbound lanes of Interstate 94 for about three hours while towcompanies cleared the vehicles from the scene. Traffic was also detoured for about threehours.
Due to the icy roads and crosswinds, a Travel Alert was issued for Cass County. The highway patrol reports several other vehicles lost control and had driven off the roadway in different locations due to the ice and wind.
