Officials said each lot ranges in size from one to five acres. Sixteen one-acre lots were offered in Honomu and 20 five-acre lots and 32 two-acre lots were offered in Makuu.

The acquisition of the land will "allow beneficiaries to live and grow food on their lots for home consumption or small-scale economic agricultural activity."
Nearly 200 beneficiaries celebrated the win at Keaukaha Elementary School in Hilo. Beneficiaries looking to grow produce commercially must create a farm plan. There is also an option to build a single-family home or supplemental dwelling unit.
These lots are more than pieces of land, they’re opportunities for our beneficiaries to reconnect with the ‘āina as Prince Jonah Kūhiō Kalanianaʻole intended. These projects serve as solutions to ending the DHHL waitlist and highlights the department’s efforts to create diverse homesteading options for those awaiting lease awards.

Senator Kurt Fevella and Representative Darius Kila also showed their support, emphasizing the need to keep people, especially Native Hawaiians, in Hawaii.
"This is very important for me to give to my baby because both my parents, my grandparents and now I get this awarded land for my baby to have this opportunity in the future, and it’s very exciting, I did not expect it," said DHHL beneficiary Gabriel Kealoha.
