ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – With decreasing temperatures, the Albuquerque Fire Rescue (AFR) is staying vigilant against outside fires. The department also noted they responded to dozens of fires over the last 24 hours.           AFR said they responded to at least 87 outside fires within the last 24 hours. The department said those numbers aren't out of the ordinary but continue to warn the public about their dangers.   In February, AFR Chief Emily Jaramillo said, "In a matter of minutes, a campfire can spread to a building, to dry brush, and weeds, tents or create a life-threatening situation for people around the area.” To better prepare for an influx of cold weather calls, AFR launched Brush 3 last year. The AFR truck is aimed solely at combating outside fires. AFR said Brush 3 has taken at least 28 outside fire calls in the past day. Since October 30, around the time AFR made an early start to their outside fire program, the department said the truck has responded to around 600 calls for smaller fires. Earlier this year, Jaramillo addressed the "Wash Tub Laundromat" fire that devastated a downtown building, which AFR said started as a warming fire. "While the fire may have been lit simply to warm individuals outdoors or to help cook their food, many of these fires are lit in areas that are dangerous to the individuals or the surrounding structures,” said Jaramillo. AFR said there have also been 280 structure fires this year so far, which is tracking similar to last year’s 342 structure fires. The department is urging the public to call 911 if they see any fires, promising to extinguish all illegal fires they encounter. AFR is asking residents to provide the location of the fire, what is burning if possible, and if any structures are being threatened. When the department does extinguish an outside warming fire, winter clothes are provided to those who need them.
