URI To Face Central Connecticut in First Round of FCS Playoffs
Nov 24, 2024
Rhode Island will be the No. 10 seed and host Central Connecticut State in the opening round of the 2024 FCS Championship at Meade Stadium on Saturday, Nov. 30.
One day after the Rams won a share of the CAA Football title, URI was officially named as part of the 24-team FCS Championship field. Rhody is one of 14 schools to receive an at-large bid to the tournament, marking the program’s first postseason appearance since 1985.
Players, coaches and staff gathered together in the Eleanor M. Carlson Strength & Conditioning Center to watch the FCS Championship Selection Show on ESPNU Sunday.
Rhode Island earned its way to the postseason by going 10-2 during the regular season. Rhody is undefeated against true FCS programs this season, with its only losses at FBS-level Minnesota on Sept. 7 and at Delaware on Nov. 9. Delaware is leaving CAA Football after this season and was not eligible for the FCS playoffs this season while it transitions to the FBS level.
The postseason nod is the fourth in program history for the football program. Then known as the NCAA Division I-AA Playoff, Rhode Island made the field in 1981, 1984 and 1985. In both 1984 and 1985, the Rams reached the national quarterfinals.
Rhody is 2-3 all time in the postseason, including a 2-0 record at Meade Stadium. The Rams defeated Richmond 23-17 in the opening round of 1984. The following year, URI knocked off Akron 35-27 at home in the first round.
Rhode Island will face NEC champion CCSU in the opening round. CCSU (7-5) won its last four games, beating Duquesne 21-14 Saturday to clinch the league title. The winner will play seventh-seeded Mercer on Saturday, Dec. 7.
Tickets for the game start at $17.
The opening round game will be streamed on ESPN+, with a full ESPN production crew making its way to Kingston for the game. Kickoff is scheduled for 12 p.m.
