IMPD detectives investigating more than a dozen weekend shootings

INDIANAPOLIS — It was a dangerous weekend in Indianapolis as IMPD homicide and aggravated assault detectives were called out to investigate at least a dozen shootings — two of which were fatal.
Saturday night, the first killing happened at a fast food restaurant not far from the intersection of East 38th Street and North Keystone Avenue, where a person was found shot to death.
Several hours later, outside a bar in the 4200 block of East New York Street, an argument inside spilled out into the parking lot. One man pulled a gun. A neighbor told FOX59 and CBS4 that he heard five or six shots. Two people were wounded. The dead man had completed a sentence with Community Correction in the last year as a result of a previous felony conviction of assault with a deadly weapon.
Less than an hour later, shortly after 3 a.m., as a strip club in the 400 block of Southeastern Avenue was closing, an argument broke out that led to a shooting outside.
“What we have been able to ascertain so far is there was some kind of disturbance inside the establishment and one of the individuals involved stated he was going out to get his gun,” said Captain Don Weilhammer of IMPD. “Outside in the parking lot, numerous shots rang out, and unfortunately, we have an adult male with wounds consistent with a gunshot wound.”
This is the second time this year someone has been shot at the Brass Flamingo, the third time in twelve months.
This is also the ninth time this year IMPD has been called to quell trouble at the bar.
There’s a sign outside the Brass Flamingo that reads, “Support your local law enforcement! Thank an officer today!”
Captain Weilhammer said if the club and its patrons want to thank a cop, they should take IMPD’s advice.
“Obviously, if you’ve been drinking, it’s probably not a good idea to try to talk it out,” he said. “You’re much better off to turn and walk away, because lots of times tonight people aren’t thinking straight.”
