WASHINGTON, DC (DC News Now)-- Ted Leonsis is a fan of history and he's now sharing some of the most significant moments in history captured through the eyes of one of the most influential photojournalists. "Harry Benson: Washington DC--Iconic Photographs for the Nation's Capital" is the first display featured in Leonsis' new art gallery located next to Capital One Arena, where his Washington Capitals, and Washington Wizards play. "Some of these photos, he's the only person who took it or could have taken it," Leonsis said of the photographs taken by the famed British photographer. "The Robert Kennedy photos and the Martin Luther King photos are incredible moments in capturing history." Suspect arrested for shooting man in Manassas, police say Leonsis met Benson about 10 years ago in Florida, where Leonsis has a home. The two became friends as Leonsis bought more of Benson's work and decided to put it on display. The pictures include world leaders, civil rights leaders, and some of the biggest names in entertainment. "I think it's the sexiest photograph ever taken," Leonsis said of the picture of East Germany and West Germany when the Berlin Wall fell in November 1989. Leonsis opened the gallery not just to show the works of various artists, but to give people another reason to come downtown besides to watch his teams play next door. "I really think the community people who walk through it fall in love with it," Leonsis said. The display is open to the public Wednesday thru Sunday from 10 a.m.-5 p.m., except on game day at Capital One Arena. Admission is free.
