FORECAST: Monday starts chilly, with a slight warmup coming
Nov 24, 2024
Tonight, the thermometer will fall into the low to mid-30s for most people and mid to upper 20s, especially in areas with a snowpack, under primarily clear skies.
Dry conditions will persist throughout Monday afternoon, but a cold front will move through by nightfall, increasing rain chances, first along the Allegheny Front and, after midnight, along the I-95 corridor. At this juncture, rain amounts look light with this storm system, with most of the area outside the mountains receiving less than a tenth of an inch. Regarding temperatures, Monday's highs will be above average, reaching the low to mid-60s for many people.
The cold front and weak storm system clear our coast on Tuesday, with drier air and sunshine returning by afternoon. In response to some sun and west wind, afternoon temperatures are forecast to be warmer than Monday's highs but still in the 60s. The winds will also be felt Tuesday morning into Tuesday afternoon, ranging between 20-30 mph, but they will decrease Tuesday night as high pressure builds overhead.
On Wednesday, one of the biggest travel days of the year, the DMV will have high-pressure overhead, bringing the region plenty of dry weather and sunny skies. Clouds will, however, increase through the late day and into the evening ahead of our next storm system, which arrives on Thanksgiving Day. Seasonable temperatures are expected, ranging from the upper 40s to mid-50s, before the much colder air arrives Friday. Current thinking is that light precipitation begins overnight on Wednesday and continues into Thursday morning. All areas will see rain initially, as the airmass ahead of the front is relatively mild. A second area of storminess will develop to the south on Thursday, bringing more rain to the region Thursday night into Friday. In the end, rainfall amounts should be beneficial, ranging between half an inch to an inch.
Friday is forecast to dry east of the mountains, but upslope snows and gusty northwest wind will crank up again for the mountains. Even with some sunshine Friday afternoon for most people east of I-81, our temperatures will trend below normal. The start of next weekend has trended dry, but temperatures will run well below average with some lingering wind.
