HAMILTON — There’s a first time for everything. In this case, the Mooch Senior Girls Soccer game ended in a scoreless draw for the first time in history on Sunday afternoon at Al Cowell Field inside Veterans Park. “Honestly, no, not expecting that,” said Ewing goalie Emily Gamboa Ordini, who helped preserve the clean sheet for the Red Team with a late save. “We held our own and played a really good defensive game. We had some opportunities going up the other end, too.” The annual Mooch Games honor the memory of Glenn “Mooch” Myernick, who grew up playing soccer in Lawrence and went on to earn national and international fame, before dying suddenly 18 years ago. Teams where the red and white colors of Myernick’s beloved Lawrence High. Gamboa Ordini was voted the Goalkeeper of the Year by the CVC coaches and showed why with a number of saves. Hightstown’s Gabbi DeMarco and Hamilton West’s Carissa Scelza were the other goalkeepers who kept the ball out of the net. “It showed me that all of my hard work paid off because it was a tough season for us as mostly seniors and not getting the results we necessarily wanted,” Gamboa Ordini said. “It was still a good season and I’m grateful for the opportunity.” Gamboa Ordini made 249 saves this season and over her four year career — all as the Blue Devils’ starter — she was credited with 815 stops. She even added her lone career goal this season in a game against Hamilton. The highlight of the season for Ewing was a 2-0 victory over Robbinsville in the first round of the CVC Tournament. “It helped us out because you are the underdogs all season and to beat Robbinsville was amazing,” said Gamboa Ordini, who will play next season at the Wentworth Institute of Technology where she plans to study interior design. “We played a really good game and it clicked for us.” On the other side of the coin were the attacking players who just couldn’t get the ball in the goal. That includes Nottingham’s TCNJ-bound standout Bridget Cutty. “We were talking about that at halftime because we got so many chances in the first half,” said Cutty, who played for the White Team after scoring 19 goals for the Northstars. “We were like, ‘OK, why can’t we score? We got to drive, drive, drive,’ and we did that but it just wouldn’t go in. It was so unfortunate and unlucky.” Cutty arrived just in time to play after participating in the EDP Cup Fall Showcase in Hammonton in the morning. She felt it was important to represent Nottingham, especially since a couple of her teammates were unable to make the Mooch Game. “I wanted to represent us and our senior class,” Cutty said. “I think a pretty good job of representing them well.” As did all the seniors who turned out. “I play with a bunch of them for travel, too,” Gamboa Ordini said. “It’s great.”
