CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) - Its almost Black Friday, and many shoppers will be heading to their favorite retailers to get the best deals. 22News has some safety tips to keep in mind on one of the busiest shopping days of the year. Many people 22News spoke to are eagerly anticipating the big day, but are keeping safety at the forefront of their minds. While the days of camping out at local malls and swarming storefronts aren't as popular nowadays, the National Retail Federation expects over 130 million people to shop on Black Friday. State Farm suggests keeping these safety precautions in mind while the stores are packed to protect yourself from accidents or thefts. First and foremost they say it's important to stay aware of your surroundings and try not to be too distracted by your phone or carry an overwhelming number of bags. Slip your more expensive purchases into less noticeable bags, perhaps from your less expensive purchases that day. It is also suggested to avoid arguments or fights over an item and to ask for help moving and loading large items if needed. Keep your purse and wallet close to your body at all times. Meaghan Farrel of Chicopee told 22News, "I try not to go at peak hours, when stores open tend to be at lesser times try to sneak in there or like midday, I try for different hours." Experts say it's also a good idea to have a plan in case you get separated from your group, such as a designated meeting spot. You should also know of exit locations in case an emergency occurs. Now if you're not able to make it to one of the retailers holding sales Friday, many of those same stores will have discounts online through Cyber Monday.
