STATESBORO, Ga. (WSAV) - On Saturday Bulloch Academy defeated First Presbyterian Day 14-10 to secure its first GIAA Class AAAA state title since 1997.
The Gators finished the season with a perfect 12-0 record, defeating last year's state champs in dramatic fashion.
The game started as a defensive battle, both teams went into the locker room at halftime with the score tied 0-0.
Things quickly headed up in the second for Bulloch's offense, on the back of Gator running back Shamar Jenkins. Jenkins scored both Gator touchdowns, including a touchdown run late in the 4th quarter to give Bulloch the lead and help secure the victory.
"We just felt destined to be here," said Head Coach Aaron Phillips. "Undefeated we get to beat the team that knocked us out last year, we get to beat the defending state champion, you know it's like a fairy tale and I'm proud of these guys."
Both players and coaches felt this was the season Bulloch Academy would get the job done.
"It's been a journey," said Gator running back Shamar Jenkins. "We worked day in and day out from the regular season to the weight room and it all paid off tonight, we're champions."
