'Day of Giving' to benefit local nonprofits
Nov 24, 2024
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) -- The holiday season is about to shift into high gear, and a Sioux Falls sporting goods store is preparing to give back in a big way.
It's the season of generosity, and Scheels in Sioux Falls is now accepting nominations for its annual Day of Giving.
"Our Scheels Day of Giving is just a campaign we get to do at the end of the year where we get to give back to all the people that have given so much to us," Scheels Social Media Manager Jenna Schlapkohl said.
The giving campaign got its start in 2020, with a dozen nonprofits sharing $12,000. That number now stands at $50,000, with ten organizations receiving $5,000 each.
"Obviously, the nonprofits love it, we love giving back to them, but we also benefit from it because we get to learn about all of the new nonprofits that we might not have known about," Schlapkohl said. "They're always so happy and thrilled with that amount of money. They always tell us all the things that they get to do with it and it's just amazing stuff that they're all doing," Schlapkohl added.

"The Day of Giving is our way to give back to the community," Scheels Events Coordinator Cierra Von Bergen said.
Von Bergen says you can have a say in who wins by nominating your favorite nonprofits.
"So, we'll post it on social media. You can find it on Facebook, there will be a link to a Google form, you just nominate your nonprofit on that Google form and it'll go to a spreadsheet," Von Bergen said.
Nominations must be submitted by December 1st, allowing Scheels to spread some holiday cheer in advance of Christmas.
"There's a lot of people in the community in need during this time of year that can't afford to get their kids Christmas gifts or just to be together with their family and so the nonprofits really like to give back during this time, so it's our way to give back to them," Von Bergen said.
Again, the deadline to nominate a nonprofit is Sunday, December 1st.
