Warm, wet start to week in central Indiana; rain/snow chances for Thanksgiving travel
Nov 24, 2024
Showers and mild start to week
It was the warmest day since Tuesday with highs more typical of late October across Central Indiana. These are numbers almost 20° milder than some spots had on Saturday. The mild will continue to open the shortened work week, too.
A system out west will give Central Indiana a decent amount of rainfall coverage throughout the daytime Monday. However, southwest winds will keep us warm with highs again in the mid-to-upper 50s. It will not be a washout, but scattered showers will be around sunrise and into the evening. Rain amounts will be light but have the umbrella handy. This will come ahead of a cold front that will drop temperatures for the days leading up to Turkey Day Thursday.
Turning sunny and cooler Tuesday, then active for travel day Wednesday
Skies will clear and Tuesday will be the sunniest day of the week. But in the wake of the frontal passage, winds will shift and temperatures will drop back to more seasonable levels. Expect highs on Tuesday and Wednesday in the mid-to-upper 40s. Tuesday will be dry but the second round of precipitation arrives Wednesday night.
There are still several details to be worked out. However, this system will impact portions of the Midwest and Ohio Valley late Wednesday and Turkey Day Thursday with rain/snow. Some travel impacts are possible with that. The storm track is still being worked out but it will be late Wednesday/early Thursday when precipitation will be falling. See the slide show below.
Regardless of the track, things will dry out quickly and most of Thanksgiving itself will be dry. Expect highs slightly below normal in the upper 30s to around 40°.
Coldest of the season follows
Following Turkey Day, much colder air arrives late week into next weekend. This trend of below-normal temperatures will extend into December's opening days, too. By next Friday and Saturday, forecast highs will be around freezing and lows will be in the teens.
A few flurry chances exist for next Saturday. Given the ample northwest flow but limited moisture content in the forecast, the chances are low but not zero. It will be after next Saturday with persistent upper-level troughing occurring which will give Central Indiana highs below freezing potentially. Not looking at any big rain or snow chances for now but December will open with a bang.
