Humpback whale spotted off Myrtle Beach State Park pier

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WBTW) -- At least one humpback whale is making its way along the Garden City and Myrtle Beach coasts, with at least two official sightings of the animal reported this week.
Myrtle Beach State Park's X account on Saturday morning posted an 8-second video of the whale breaching about 20 feet offshore in Garden City. Later in the day, officials said another creature was spotted just off the pier.
Humpbacks can get up to 60 feet long and grow to 40 tons. Some can live up to 90 years but are impacted by entanglement in fishing gear and vessel strikes, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration says.

A 2015 report by the state Department of Natural Resources estimated around 11,570 humpbacks lived in the North Atlantic, with up to 900 using American waters.
NOAA in 2008 implemented a speed limit requiring vessels longer than 65 feet to maintain a speed of 10 knots until a certain point offshore.
Since then, five of the 12 documented right whale deadly vessel strikes came from boats less than 65 feet long. As of 2022, fewer than 350 of the whales remained.
