BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) -- A high school student organized an event Saturday aimed at putting a stop to gun violence in Bakersfield and to honor the marketplace murder victim who was shot Nov. 10.
Jalynn Hammond, the student who organized "Stop the Gun Violence", expects this event to be just one of many more to come.
"I was very passionate on a lot of things, but violence is obviously an ongoing thing in our community, and it meant a lot to me to do something so I decided to host the first 'Stop the Gun Violence' event," said Jalynn Hammond.
The event, which features many organizations from around Bakersfield, is also in part to remember Prince Michael Banner, the boy murdered at the Marketplace in November.
"He was lighthearted, he was a kind and gentle spirit, he was calm, and reserved," said Prince's mother, Quenesha Banner. "He was goofy. He was my only baby. He was just loved by so many people."

Hammond, a 17-year-old student from Del Oro High School, is also a Kern High School District student board member, who recently founded a student club called Students for Change Bakersfield. The club promotes action against pressing issues in our community.
Hammond says she's always believed in creating a path when one isn't visible.
"I guess I just really have been raised on finding a way or making one," said Hammond. "Also, it's not about what you know, it's who you know, so when I put those two mottos together, you've got the outcome of this."
While the pain still lingers, Banner says she'll always remember her son for being the one who made her a mom.
"He created motherhood for me and he made motherhood very easy and simple for me. He will always be remembered and loved and the people that showed up today and that continue to show up for us, shows me how much my son meant to the world and to his community," said Banner.
