Wickliffe Sunset Development housing project to start by end of November

Construction of Sunset Development townhome cottages in Wickliffe is now slated to start before the end of November.
The development will be a 55 and up community located on the open field where the former Ponderosa once was at 29553 Euclid Ave.
“They were waiting on financing to wrap up, but they’re good to go,” said Mayor Joe Sakacs. Construction had previously been set to start in September. “That field was empty for years. That was one of my biggest goals — getting that developed.”
The property has been something that has been asked about by many, Sakacs said. According to the Ohio Housing Finance Agency, the project is to include 28 one-bedroom units and 26 two-bedroom units in multiple cottage-style buildings.
The cottages will have one-car garages and a driveway with room for a second car. Indoor and outdoor common areas will also be available, including a community building, fitness center and patios.
Meanwhile, new homes are still slated for development at the Wickliffe Elementary School and Wickliffe Middle School properties, 1821 Lincoln Road and 29240 Euclid Ave.
“Those are going to be beautiful homes on the corner of Euclid Avenue and Lloyd Road,” Sakacs said. “That probably won’t start taking place until the springtime. Everything moves at a turtle’s pace, but it moves like that for a reason to make sure everybody’s got all their ducks in a row.”
The former school buildings have been torn down for redevelopment in light of Wickliffe Schools preschool through 12th grade campus opening. The project dates to 2017, according to Superintendent Joseph Spiccia.
At the time, the school board determined it would pursue what was in the best interest of city residents.
“The community responded, through community meetings and a poll, what was needed to keep families in and attract new families to Wickliffe,” Spiccia said.
