Monsters build 40 lead, then rally to win eighth straight
Nov 24, 2024
Just focus on the final score — not how the Monsters got there.
That is Coach Trent Vogelhuber’s concern.
The Monsters jumped out to a 2-0 first-period lead on the Milwaukee Admirals on Nov. 24 at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse, increased the lead to a 4-0 advantage 6:10 into the second period, then gave up five straight goals and found themselves behind, 5-4, midway through the third period.
All’s well that ends well, however. Trey Fix-Wolansky scored a sixth attacker goal with 21.8 seconds left in regulation to make it 5-5, then David Jiricek scored 1:49 into overtime to complete the comeback — much to the delight of the 10,087 fans inside the FieldHouse.

“You get a little bit loose, you feel everything’s working because we’re doing things the right way and you feel overconfident,” Vogelhuber said. “You think it’s going to be any easy night, but that’s not how we got our lead.
“That’s a real good team over there and they showed us that when we let our foot off the gas, but it’s better to learn those lessons when you win.”

The Monster (12-4-0-1) won their eighth straight game to tie a franchise record. It is quite a turnaround after starting the season 2-3 with an additional loss in a shootout.
“I don’t really care about a winning streak or a losing streak,” Vogelhuber said. “We’re just trying to go one day at a time getting better. But it’s good for a few moments. It’s something that’s been done only once here before. Congratulate them on it, so I’m happy for them.”
The momentum shifted in Milwaukee’s favor after the Monsters’ fast start when the Admirals’ Jake Livingstone scored a shorthanded goal at 10:16 of the second period. Three minutes and nine seconds later, it was a 4-3 game.
It would have been a depressing defeat for the Monsters had they not rallied to win, but Fix-Wolansky is the team leader for a reason, and there is a reason Vogelhuber had “Fixi” on the ice as regulation was winding down.
Fix-Wolansky, whose second-period goal made it 4-0, got behind two Milwaukee players and, skating full speed, crossed in front of the net and tucked the puck inside the left post on a backhand shot for his ninth goal of the season.
“I tried to get as much speed as I could,” Fix-Wolansky said. “I took the puck and drove toward the net and put it far side, so I was pretty happy about that one.”
Jirichek’s game-winner was just as pretty. Owen Sillinger — who opened the scoring for Cleveland 1:07 into the first period — skated down the left side and fed the puck ahead to Jirichek streaking down the slot. The pass was perfect. Jirchek redirected the pass between the pads of goalie Magnus Chrona to send everyone home happy.
Luca Del Bel Belluz scored the other two Monsters goals. Zach Sawhenko stopped 12 of 17 shots by the Admirals.
