(WJW) - Sugar Foods is recalling pouches of their Fresh Gourmet Tortilla Strips commonly used as a salad topping and often found near the produce section of grocery stores. According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the recall applies to certain 3.5-ounce pouches of Fresh Gourmet Tortilla Strips Santa Fe Style, pictured below, and is due to a contamination of undeclared wheat allergen.  A package of the Fresh Gourmet salad toppers that are being recalled. (Via the FDA) "On November 19, 2024, the firm was contacted by a consumer stating the pouches contained Crispy Onions instead of the Tortilla Strips. The Crispy Onion Strips contains wheat which is not listed on the label for the Tortilla Strips. No illnesses have been reported to date," the company wrote in their notice. "People who have a wheat allergy or severe sensitivity to wheat run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume the product." Impacted pouches of the Fresh Gourmet Tortilla Strips Santa Fe Style are 3.5 ounces and have a UPC code of 7 87359 17504 6 and a best by date of June 20, 2025. Dates printed on your food aren’t about expiration: What they really mean According to the FDA, they were distributed between September 20 and November 11 of this year in 22 states: Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, North Carolina, New Jersey, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Texas, Utah, Virginia, and Washington. No illnesses have been reported because of this recall.
