GLENS FALLS, N.Y. (WROC) — Senior outside hitter Kiera Cornman had a stellar performance to lead the Fairport girls volleyball team to their second straight state title, taking down Shenendehowa 3-1 in the Class AAA championship game. The championship match was not an easy one against the Shen, who had beaten them twice this season in various tournaments. Shen was ranked first in the state in NYSPHSAA's largest class, with Fairport second. The Red Raiders had some "jitters" early, per head coach Trish Forgensi. Fairport lost the first set 25-16 but rallied in the second to tie the match up with a 25-18 victory. The third set is often the decisive one in volleyball and it proved to be just that on Saturday night. Shen was in front 23-20 and seemed primed to take a 2-1 lead. However, the Red Raiders stormed back with five straight points to take the set. Avery Harris had the winning kill for set point. "That is the resiliency of my team," said Trish Forgensi. "They go out and play for each other, they play Fairport volleyball, and they do not back down. I am just so proud of them." Fairport led 15-7 in the fourth and survived a brief Shen run to take the set 25-18. Cornman had the final kill of the game, her teammates surrounding her after the victory. "It was such a special moment," said Cornman. "These girls are amazing, I love every single one of them. It was such a special time to spend with them." Cornman took over the match when Fairport needed her most, proving to be the best player on the court. The senior is committed to play beach volleyball at the University of Hawaii. Not only did the Red Raiders show resiliency in their championship match, they battled through adversity all season long. "It took a lot. We've had a lot of injuries. I had a bad sprain in my ankle, a torn ligament," said Cornman. "They thought I was going to have to leave with surgery. We really fought through it. We knew we were going to get everyone's best game coming into it." Fairport graduated a handful of talented players last year and will have to reload once again after this season. Cornman, Harris, setter Lana Wood, Dulany Yusko, Natalie Larzelere, and Waverly Milliman ended their senior season with another state title. "They've been with me for four years," said Forgensi of her seniors. "Just being able to celebrate with them in this moment is just the best feeling. They of all people deserve it the most." "We knew that the thing that was going to win the game was our teamwork," said Cornman. "We're an experienced group. We knew that our teamwork together was going to get us through those tough moments. We always believed in each other."
