SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - An event in Springfield on Saturday aimed to bring the community together, and combat depression and social isolation among seniors ahead of Thanksgiving. Dozens attended the 'Friendsgiving celebration' and enjoyed a free traditional Thanksgiving meal, entertainment, and raffles at the Bay Area Neighborhood Council. The money spent on raffles went towards supporting senior programs and services in Springfield. Additionally, seniors were also given free phones to stay connected with their loved ones. This event not only provided a sense of community and support for seniors, but also helped to alleviate loneliness. "Families are busy, you know, so the children are busier things," expressed Tracey Thomas, a Fitness Instructor for Seniors. "So to give them a network and a community that they can come together to fellowship, fellowship. And they love it." Ali Haqq, the President of Ali Productions Entertainment told 22News, "It's important to let our seniors know that we are here for them and that they are not alone during this time." The event also included resources from some of the leading senior organizations such as Center for Human Development Services, Raymond Jordan Senior Center, Rewarding Insurance Agency and Behavior Health Helpline.
