Nick Poisson scored 58 seconds into overtime as the No. 10/11 Providence College men’s hockey team rallied for a 4-3 win over Long Island University on Saturday (Nov. 23) at Schneider Arena. Poisson registered career point No. 100 with an assist in the third period. GOALIES Philip Svedebäck (PC) – 23 saves, 3 goals against Noah Rupprecht (LIU) – 34 saves, 4 goals against NOTES – The Sharks got onto the board midway through the first period, as Riley Wallack connected on a loose puck in front during the power-play, giving Long Island the 1-0 lead. – Long Island doubled their lead with one second to play in the opening period, as Connor Gregga caught a piece of a Trent Powell shot from the blue line before tipping it in, making it 2-0 on the power-play. – The Friars broke onto the scoreboard 6:28 into the second period, as Ryan O’Reilly caught a Tomas Machu shot with his stick, re-directing it in for his team-leading sixth goal of the season. Will Elger also earned an assist on the set up. – Providence knotted things up at 2-2 with 36 seconds to go in the second period when John Mustard finished on a one-timer setup from Trevor Connelly. Logan Will skated the puck into the zone, earning the secondary assist on the power-play goal. – The Sharks quickly regained the lead, as Nick Bernardo connected on a shot from the blue line 15 seconds later to give Long Island the 3-2 advantage after two periods of action. – The Friars looked to have the equalizer midway through the third period, but the play was called off for a player being in the crease, keeping the Sharks’ 3-2 lead intact. – With 1:57 to play in the third period, the Friars tied the game at 3-3, as Tanner Adams pocketed the puck on a wrap-around goal, capitalizing on the extra attacker opportunity and sending the game to overtime. Nick Poisson and Hudson Malinoski each collected a point on Adams’ goal. – Providence earned the win just 58 seconds into the overtime period, as Connelly connected with Poisson on a one-timer, winning the game 4-3 in overtime for the Friars. Austen May also collected an assist on the game-winner. – With his assist in the third period and game-winning goal in overtime, Poisson becomes the 55th player in Providence College history to reach the 100-point career milestone. – Forwards Ryan O’Reilly and Tanner Adams each scored in the win, giving both players a team-leading six goals on the season. – Ten different Friars scored a point in the overtime win, led by Poisson’s one goal, one assist performance and Trevor Connelly’s two assist game. – Seventeen different Friars landed a shot on net in the win, highlighted by a eight-shot showing from Mustard. – Providence has gone to overtime six times in the first 13 games of the season. – Saturday marked the first-ever meeting between the two schools.
