MEMPHIS, Tenn. --- Thousands of people packed downtown Memphis Saturday night as the holiday season kicked off, but with the added crowds also come safety concerns.  The Christmas Tree Lighting was just one of the events that happened downtown Saturday.  “It’s very exciting. I mean with the kids, the smiles on their faces. Just seeing them enjoy the things I used to enjoy as a child. So, I think it’s just perfect," said attendee Toni Staples. Downtown Christmas Tree lit for the holiday season A few blocks over at FedExForum, Justin Timberlake held a concert, bringing many visitors to the area.  While everyone WREG spoke with says they feel safe, the Memphis Police Department wants to make sure everyone is aware of these safety tips while being downtown for the festivities. Travel in groups when possible. Remain free of distractions, such as the phone, when walking from one location to another. Be aware of your surroundings, if you see something say something. Choose a well-lit and gated parking lot or garage if possible.  Remove all valuables from your vehicle and Lock your car WREG spotted several officers throughout the night. Memphis Police ask that if you see something suspicious, please report it to the closest officer near you.
